Sniff. Snort. Snore.

/Colorado News Articles/ - BEVERLY HILLS, CA, August 06, 2008 - It is hard to believe that one teeny, tiny little piece of cartilage could have such a huge effect when it happens to be a bit out of place. But if you have a deviated septum, you know exactly what that effect can be.

What is the septum?

The septum is that very narrow bit of boney-type wall that separates one nostril from the other. When it is "normal", breathing, sleeping - everything nose related - is generally not a problem.

If the septum is deviated, or out of place, it means the cartilage has been damaged. The damage can come from getting hit in the nose, like a boxer, or it may have been deformed at birth. Having a deviated septum means you're probably struggling with any or all of the following:

• Breathing problems
• Excessive snoring
• Sleep apnea
• Sinus infections
• Poor nasal drainage
• Polyps of the nasal passages

Not only is having a deviated septum a problem for you, but it can also adversely affect those around you. Everyone from your co-workers to your spouse or partner has to listen to you sniff and snort and snore. Perhaps it's time you considered a procedure known as septoplasty.

Septoplasty, or septal reconstruction, is a surgical procedure that involves removing any excess cartilage in the nose, then surgically straightening and reshaping the septum. The entire process happens inside the nasal cavities, so there are no external scars to be concerned about. Once the septoplasty procedure is completed, the nasal passages are like new. You can breathe normally, and, unless there are other health reasons, the sniff, snort and snore routine is resolved.

Many times, people undergoing a septoplasty will also get a nose job. Since the plastic surgeon is already working on the interior of the nose, it makes it the perfect time to have that unsightly bump removed or have the bulbous nose tip thinned out. You can breathe better and get a more aesthetically pleasing nose all at the same time. (Isn't modern medicine wonderful?!)
