Elementary School Adopts Ideas From Sentient Publications Book
Students at Logan Elementary School in Logan Township, New Jersey, are using a new program called Flex Time, based on author Dr. Richard Selznick's book, "The Shutdown Learner".

BOULDER, CO, February 27, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Students at Logan Elementary School in Logan Township, New Jersey, are using a program called Flex Time to find a better way to learn. Developed by Principal Bob Fisicaro and implemented at the start of this school year, Flex Time is based on Dr. Richard Selznick's book "The Shutdown Learner: Helping Your Academically Discouraged Child" (Sentient Publications, 2009). The program aims to let students explore their strengths instead of focus on taking tests.

"The educational system is primarily tailored to students with a verbal type of intelligence," Fisicaro said. "All students should learn how to read, write and reason, but our staff is honing in on educating the whole student."

In eight four-week sessions students can choose from classes in technology, puppetry, guitar, piano, perspective drawing and special math. In these 30-minute, small group classes they receive personal attention from teachers.

"Schools at the elementary level have become extremely academic and there's not much time for other types of intelligence to be recognized," said third grade teacher Teresa Ternyila. "This gives the students a chance to experiment with a creative curriculum and the kids really look forward to it."

Dr. Selznick's book is based on his experience as director of Cooper Learning Center in the pediatrics department of Cooper University Hospital, where he assesses and treats a broad range of learning and behavioral problems in children. In a friendly, non-technical style, he helps parents understand their child's characteristics and offers specific approaches to break the downward spiral.
