SOMA is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to enhancing professional standards and innovation through continuing education of U.S. Special Operations Forces (SOF) medical personnel. The annual convention provides a training and educational forum for military and civilian medical practitioners, educators, administrators and students.

The NSN is officially recognized by the United States government, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and many governments around the world, including the Department of Defense (DOD).
